Kindergarten Update - July
We are looking forward to officially welcoming you to the Habitat Schoolhouse in September! The first two weeks of Kindergarten are typically very busy for parents. This email contains some information We would like to pass along the information so you have time to plan.
STARTING LESSONS:
The suggested first day of school is September 6, 2021. You are not required to begin on that day but if you would like to go through the program at the same time as other families in this program we suggest you start on September 6th.
We are preparing to ship out your curriculum by the end of the month. There have been a few unforeseen delays with printing due to Covid including both supply shortages and shipping delays. We are working hard to stay on track in order to have everything shipped to you by the end of July so that you have plenty of time to prepare before the first day of school.
If you have not registered for Kindergarten, at the time this post was published, we still have a few spots left in the program. If you are reading this later we may no longer have spots in our program and you will be added to a waitlist. >> REGISTER HERE
WELCOMING CONVERSATIONS:
In conventional school, an important part of a successful start to Kindergarten is the opportunity for your child to sit down and visit with their Kindergarten Teacher. With homeschooling, this likely means that your child's teacher is you! We encourage you to have a short conversation with your child (suggested approximately 15 minutes) about the fact that they will be starting school in September, and what that means. They may already be very excited about the idea of starting Kindergarten, or they may be apprehensive about the impending change in routine. Use this conversation to set any expectations you have of your child, to talk about the routine you will be implementing, and discuss with them what their thoughts are about starting Kindergarten.
A few examples for your child:
You expect your child to sit at their homeschooling table while doing their schoolwork.
You expect your child to try their best every day.
You expect them to help clean up after class is done.
A few examples for the parent/teacher:
You will be sure to take breaks when your child seems uninterested or overwhelmed.
You will be patient with their learning and help them when they ask for help.
You will celebrate little wins when they figure something out or are proud of their work.
Setting expectations and having a conversation about what is about to happen will help your child adjust to your new schedule and get excited about starting school. We also suggest that you begin to think about your child’s personal needs (when they typically have snack time, when to plan breaks between classes for fun and outside time, your child's interests, etc).
CLOTHING:
Kindergarten can be messy and we suggest your child spend time outside every day…YES, even when it rains. Outside play is amazing for development. Please ensure they will be ready for the outdoors, including rain boots, mittens, hats, warm jackets, rain pants, etc. Have them practice dressing themselves to make outside time easier for everyone.
SUPPLIES:
We will be emailing a school supply list to families registered for Kindergarten.
